What I'm doing right now.

Outdoor activities

The kiting season is starting

The winter is coming to an end on the Sunshine Coast, which means the surfing conditions at the local spot are less friendly to longboarders. On the upside, that's when the kiting conditions are getting more frequent.

My goals for this kiting season are to learn to jump consistently, get comfortable on my strapless board in flat conditions and do at least 5 downwinders on the ocean.

Downwinders consists of navigating down wind on the ocean, rather than going back and forth along the shore. Last year I completed my first downwinder from Mudjimba to Yaroomba and it was an exhilarating experience.

Software & Technology

Migrating to Guix

I am still migrating my server, laptop and homelab to Guix (my laptop and server are happily Guix-ed now, only the homelab left).

The next step is to ensure that my backups are working, and migrating Immich, Paperless and a few other services to Guix.

Finishing SICP

In order to improve my Scheme game, I picked up SICP a couple of months ago. I am now in the last part but I made the mistake to skip the exercises.

This month I will finish reading the book and go back to do a selection of the exercises, to ensure that I assimilate the knowledge and concepts.

OSTEP and dabbling in C

I pick up OSTEP and starting reading it. I am thoroughly enjoying it so far, learning heaps as I go down the abstraction tree.

I am doing the exercises as I go along (unlike what I have done with SICP!) and it has been tons of fun to get closer to the OS.

As a web developer, I unfortunately haven't worked at those lower levels and surprisingly knew very little about system programming and operating systems.

I absolutely recommend this book to engineer like me who aren't quite up to speed on OS. It's a fantastic read so far.

Releasing lucide-sxml

I packaged the lucide icon in a SXML format and wish to distribute it.

It is not quite ready, I need to learn more about the GNU toolchain to distribute it. I might submit it to the Guix repository.

There is nothing particular impressive about it, it was simply a good first milestone to dive deeper in the GNU/Guile ecosystem.

Life and the rest

Lesser but better

I am wrestling with the pace and expectations of the modern life, learning to accept that doing less but doing it better is the ideal way of living.

In other word, focusing on focusing!

I am still striving to embrace the ascetic computing philosophy.

Emacs is now entrenched in my workflow, and neovim isn't opened much anymore. I am crafting a simpler, saner computing environment; as a shelter from the delirious pace of the current tech industry.

I am applying this to the rest of my life; trying to slow down and be more present.

Learning to sew

We have a week off in October that was originally part of an overseas trip cancelled.

Our plan is now to enjoy what the Sunshine coast has to offer and do a "staycation" at home.

We intend to go for an overnight or two cycling trip locally; either at a local lake (Cootharaba) or up Maleny range.

My partner is fantastic seamstress; but I don't know how to sew at all. She will teach me in the coming week as I want to put together a few contraption for carrying gear on our bike.
